In this new blog series we will be connecting you with the people who make Wisewire what it is, and showcasing their talent and expertise. Remember to share with your networks using #iamwisewire, and tell us “what makes you Wisewire” for a chance to be featured next!
To launch the series, we sat down with Julie Cymek, a Learning Content Expert in math to find out what makes her tick, her advice for teachers, and to learn more about her literal rock star status.
At Wisewire I…
Specialize in writing and editing math educational products for grades three through eight. I’m particularly passionate about these grade levels, however, I have worked on books and courses for Kindergarten up to Pre-Calculus.
It might sound cliché, but the coolest products I work on are the ones that really bring math to life. I also enjoy being closely involved in projects from ideation, through production and QA.
When I was a teacher, I…
Taught sixth and seventh grade math for students of a broad range of capabilities.
I also tutored for many years, and it gave me good insight into the common sticking points for students. I remember one student was so boggled by multi-step problems, he couldn’t understand how it was possible for a math problem to require two different operations. It was really eye-opening and rewarding to work through that with him.
Math has always come naturally to me, even as a kid I knew I had a skill for helping people with math studies. My teaching experiences continue to be useful in my role at Wisewire today, particularly in the development of teacher guides, and strong, relevant distractor options for multiple choice assessment items.
My best advice for teachers is…
When it comes to new skill development, don’t back away from challenges!
I understand that teachers are extremely busy and it can be difficult to find the time to learn new things, but it is so important. Push through and you’ll be glad you did!
When I’m not at Wisewire you can find me…
On stage! For nine years, my husband and I have been managing and playing in our band: Sweet Leda.
We’ve recorded two albums and won some awards; you can even find some of our music on film and TV! So, most weekends you’ll find us at local and regional shows.
I’m also into health and fitness. I do CrossFit and yoga and love whipping up smoothies at home.
I’m so thankful for the flexibility Wisewire provides me to pursue my passions!
A penguin walks through the door right now, and he’s wearing a sombrero. What does he say, and why is he here?
Not sure what he’d say but I do know one thing; I’m definitely getting a margarita with that penguin.
